What to Do on a Hot Afternoon in Saigon: An Indoor Plan for District 1

Updated October 2026

On a hot afternoon in Saigon, the smart move is to get out of the sun and do something with your hands until the worst has passed. One way: sit down for 120 minutes at NOTE – The Scent Lab and blend your own perfume at one of our two District 1 studios, 42 Nguyễn Huệ (Floor 2) or 26 Lý Tự Trọng (Floor 3), both open 09:00–22:00. A 10 ml bottle starts at $25.92 with VAT, and seats are booked on the9base.com.

This is not a rainy-day list. Rain in Saigon comes and goes; the heat of a dry-season afternoon sits on the city for hours. Below is how to plan around it — hour by hour — so the hottest part of the day becomes the part you remember.

When is it hottest in Saigon?

Ho Chi Minh City’s dry season runs roughly from December to April, and April is usually the hottest month. Within any day, the early afternoon is the hardest stretch to be outside. If you are visiting in the dry months, plan your walking for the morning and late afternoon, and keep the middle of the day for something indoors.

You feel it first on the back of your neck. Then the pavement starts giving the heat back up at you, and the shade under the street trees shrinks to thin strips. Even locals slow down — cafés fill, shutters half-close, motorbikes cluster at red lights under any awning they can find.

Travelers often fight this. They keep the itinerary written in a cooler country and push through a museum, a market and a river walk between noon and four. By evening they are too tired for dinner. There is a better rhythm, and it starts with accepting that the afternoon belongs indoors.

What is the best thing to do indoors on a hot afternoon in Saigon?

Choose something that keeps you seated and absorbed for the whole of the hottest window, rather than a string of short stops that send you back out into the sun. A 120-minute perfume workshop does exactly that: it is a seated, shaded indoor session where you sit at a table, smell raw materials, and blend your own bottle with an instructor. When you come back down, the worst of the heat has started to pass.

That is the quiet logic of the afternoon session. Sightseeing indoors still means walking between places. Making something means staying put — and time moves differently when your attention is on one drop more or one drop less.

“Would recommend this to anyone as a great way to pause from the chaotic and overwhelming part of your holiday in Saigon” — Peter H, review platform

For a longer list of indoor ideas, our rainy-day indoor activities guide covers museums, galleries, cooking classes and more — most of them work just as well when the problem is sun rather than rain.

What does a hot afternoon plan in District 1 look like, hour by hour?

Eat lunch indoors around noon, start a perfume session at about two, come out around four, and save your walking for the softer light of late afternoon and evening. This keeps you under a roof for the hardest hours without wasting them. Here is the plan in detail.

12:00 — Lunch somewhere with a roof

Eat slowly and drink more water than you think you need. If you are near Nguyễn Huệ, the Cafe Apartment at 42 Nguyễn Huệ is a whole building of small cafés stacked floor above floor — our Cafe Apartment guide walks through it floor by floor.

13:30 — A short indoor look, if you want one

The Saigon Central Post Office is free to walk into, and its high, vaulted hall is a calm place to spend fifteen minutes. Book Street, right beside it, is shaded and quiet. Keep this part short; the point is to arrive at your session unhurried.

14:00 — Two hours at the blending table

At our Lý Tự Trọng studio, sessions start at 10:00, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:00; the 14:00 session lands right on the hottest part of the day. The Nguyễn Huệ studio is a few minutes away on the walking street. Either way, you are upstairs, seated, and busy for 120 minutes.

16:00 onward — Walk as the light softens

When you come down, the shadows are longer. This is the time for the walk you skipped at noon: Nguyễn Huệ, the Opera House, toward the river. Our District 1 walking tour gives you a route that ends right where the evening begins.

What actually happens during the 120-minute session?

You begin by smelling, not mixing: each session sets out three of our nine scent families, drawn from a wall of more than 30 raw materials, and your instructor explains what each one does. Then you blend, test and adjust until the perfume feels like yours. You finish by sealing your own serial-numbered bottle, and your formula is saved so you can re-order it later.

The instructor stays with you the whole session, teaching in Vietnamese or English. Nobody expects you to know the vocabulary. You learn it as you go — top notes that open a perfume, heart notes that carry it, base notes that stay on skin long after.

“Staff are attentive and patient, guiding us step by step to blend our favorite scent. Clean and comfortable environment, relaxing atmosphere” — Chan, review platform

Curious about the steps before you book? What to expect at a perfume workshop in Saigon walks through the session from the door to the bottle.

Does the heat change how a perfume smells?

Yes — warmth makes a perfume open faster and fade its brightest notes sooner. Light, sparkling materials such as lemon, bergamot or peppermint fly off quickly on warm skin, while heavier ones such as cedarwood, sandalwood or amber hold on longer. That is why people who blend in a hot city often build a blend with a stronger base.

This is the part of a hot-afternoon session we enjoy most. Someone arrives wanting “something fresh, something cold” — a cool drink of a perfume. Then they smell what the heat does to citrus on a blotter after twenty minutes, and the conversation changes. Fresh, yes. But fresh that lasts needs something underneath.

Which materials appear depends on the three families set out that day, so treat these as examples rather than a fixed menu. The joy is in discovering which ones you actually like when you smell them side by side.

Which studio should you choose on a hot day?

If you are staying in District 1, pick one of the two District 1 studios so the trip there is short: Nguyễn Huệ (42 Nguyễn Huệ, Floor 2, up to 8 seats) or Lý Tự Trọng (26 Lý Tự Trọng, Floor 3, up to 12 seats). Both are open 09:00–22:00. Our Thảo Điền studio (34 Nguyễn Duy Hiệu) is the largest, with up to 15 seats, and is open 08:00–18:00.

On a really hot day, the shorter your walk to the door, the better. Dress light, and if you feel the heat badly, take the 16:30 or 19:00 session at Lý Tự Trọng instead of 14:00 — by then the city itself has started to cool. Lý Tự Trọng has no parking of its own — most guests park at Vincom Đồng Khởi across the street. The Nguyễn Huệ studio is inside the Cafe Apartment building on the walking street; go to Floor 2, not Floor 4.

Not sure which suits you? Our comparison of perfume workshop studios in Saigon sets the three side by side.

How much does it cost, and how do you book?

You pay for the bottle you leave with, and VAT is already in the price: $25.92 for 10 ml, $47.52 for 20 ml, $58.32 for 30 ml or $69.12 for 50 ml. Seats are booked on the9base.com/booking; you can move yours free up to 24 hours ahead, and cancelling at least 48 hours ahead returns 80%.

The workshop holds a 4.9 rating across more than 2,300 reviews. If your afternoon is looking like a hot one, reserve a seat for the 14:00 window and let the sun do its worst without you.

What else works on a hot afternoon in District 1?

Anything that keeps you under one roof for a long stretch: a museum you actually want to read properly, a long café sit, a spa, or a cooking class. Avoid plans that chain several short outdoor walks together between noon and four. Our escape-the-heat guide lists galleries, shows and spas, and our hot-weather guide to Vietnam covers the wider country.

Whatever you choose, give the afternoon one main thing. The heat makes every extra stop cost twice as much energy as it would in the morning.

And when you finally step back out at four, a little lighter, with the bottle in your hand — spray once on your wrist. You will notice the city smells different at that hour. So will you.
