Got two hours in District 1, somewhere between the Central Post Office, the cathedral square and Lý Tự Trọng Street? Spend them making your own perfume. The newest NOTE – The Scent Lab studio sits on the 3rd floor of 26 Lý Tự Trọng, one block from the Opera House, and its perfume session lasts exactly 120 minutes, from $25.92 for a 10 ml bottle with VAT included. Seats are reserved on the9base.com.
This guide is for the traveler who is already downtown and deciding in the moment. You have a gap between check-out and a flight, a lunch that finished early, a friend running late. Here is how to spend two hours in District 1 so they become something you keep.
What can you actually do with two hours in District 1?
Two hours in District 1 is enough for one real activity plus one short look — not for three sights in a rush. The simplest plan is twenty to thirty minutes around the Central Post Office and Book Street, then a 120-minute perfume session on Lý Tự Trọng. You walk out at a time you know in advance, with a bottle you made yourself.
The heat comes off the pavement in the early afternoon. A motorbike horn holds one long note; a vendor’s radio crackles under a tamarind tree. District 1 is compact, but the sun, the traffic and the crossings slow you down more than the distances do.
So the first question is not “what is near me?” It is “what can I finish?” Most people try to do three things badly: photograph the post office, half-queue for a coffee, walk toward the river, check the time and panic. One short look, one real activity, one easy exit works better.
What fits — and what doesn’t
Fits: a slow walk past the post office and through Book Street, a coffee, a 120-minute perfume session. Doesn’t fit: the War Remnants Museum plus a market plus a river walk. If you want the full classic loop, our District 1 walking tour lays out the half-day version from Bến Thành to Nguyễn Huệ.
Is the Central Post Office and cathedral square worth a quick stop?
Yes, as a short stop of twenty to thirty minutes. The Saigon Central Post Office hall is free to walk into and noticeably calmer than the street, and Book Street (Nguyễn Văn Bình Street) runs right beside it. The Notre-Dame Cathedral across the square has been under a long restoration, so plan to see it from outside.
The post office is the building everyone recognises — the arched hall, the vaulted ceiling, the long wooden benches where people still write postcards. Step inside even for ten minutes. The light under that high roof is soft in a way the street never is.
Book Street is a short pedestrian lane of bookstalls, small cafés and shaded benches. Most titles are in Vietnamese, but browsing costs nothing, and it is a good place to sit for a moment and decide what comes next.
The cathedral’s new crosses went back onto the towers in March 2026 and much of the exterior is visible again, but access inside has been limited during the works. Check locally before planning to go in.
What happens in a perfume workshop in District 1?
You sit at a shared table, smell your way through raw materials with an instructor, then blend, test and adjust your own perfume until it feels like yours. At the end you seal a serial-numbered bottle to take home, and your formula is saved so you can re-order it. The whole session takes 120 minutes and is taught in Vietnamese or English.
Climb to the 3rd floor of 26 Lý Tự Trọng and the street drops away. The room has one shared table and a wall of more than 30 raw materials arranged in nine scent families.
You start by smelling, not mixing. Each session sets out three of the nine families, and your instructor explains what each material does: what lifts a blend, what holds it, what lingers on skin long after the opening fades.
Then you build — drop by drop, test, adjust, test again. It is slower than people expect, and calmer. Refills of your saved formula are 20% off later.
“A beautiful way to spend a breezy afternoon in Ho Chi Minh City and we came away with bespoke perfume” — Sasha K, review platform

Why does a 120-minute session fit a two-hour gap so well?
Because it ends when it says it will. Most things downtown run either too short (a viewpoint, a café) or too long (a tour, a full museum visit), while a perfume workshop runs a fixed 120 minutes from first scent to sealed bottle. On a travel day, knowing exactly when you will walk out is worth a lot.
The Lý Tự Trọng studio is open 09:00–22:00 every day, with sessions at 10:00, 14:00, 16:30 and 19:00 and up to 12 seats each. If you are deciding on the day, check the booking page for a free seat before you set off.
Version A — the morning gap
You checked out at ten, your bags are with the hotel, and your car to the airport comes after lunch. Take the 10:00 session first, while your nose is fresh. Afterwards, twenty minutes at the post office and Book Street, then lunch. If this is your final day, our guide to what to do on your last day in Ho Chi Minh City has more ideas for the hours before a flight.
Version B — the hot early afternoon
Between lunch and late afternoon the sun is at its hardest: the worst time to walk, the best time to be indoors doing something with your hands. A 14:00 session keeps you seated and out of the sun while the worst of the heat passes. We wrote a whole piece on what to do indoors on a hot afternoon in Saigon.
Version C — before dinner
The 16:30 or 19:00 sessions suit people who spent the day elsewhere and want a quiet, focused stretch before dinner. When you come down, the centre is lit and Nguyễn Huệ walking street is a short walk away; our Opera House area guide covers the evening streets around you.

How do you get to 26 Lý Tự Trọng, and where do you park?
The studio is at 26 Lý Tự Trọng, Floor 3, District 1, on the Bến Nghé side of the centre and one block from the Opera House. Take the lift or the stairs to the 3rd floor and look for the 9base door. There is no parking at the studio; most guests park at Vincom Đồng Khởi, right across the street, and walk over.
9base is the name of our custom perfume studios and the site where you book. If you arrive by ride-hail, show the driver the full address: 26 Lý Tự Trọng, Floor 3, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
Already standing on the walking street instead? Our other District 1 studio is on Floor 2 of the Cafe Apartment at 42 Nguyễn Huệ — same session, same price, different light. The Cafe Apartment guide explains that building floor by floor.
How much does the perfume workshop cost?
What you pay depends only on the bottle you leave with, VAT included: from $25.92 (594,000 VND) for 10 ml up to $69.12 (1,674,000 VND) for 50 ml, with 20 ml at $47.52 and 30 ml at $58.32. Plans shift on travel days, so it helps that rescheduling is free up to 24 hours ahead; cancelling at least 48 hours ahead returns 80%.
Full details are on the pricing page, and the session holds a 4.9 rating from more than 2,300 reviews. If that sounds like the right shape for your afternoon, pick a session and book a seat.
Do you need any experience to make perfume?
No. Most guests have never blended anything before, and the instructor sets the pace from the first blotter to the final bottle. You only need to say what you like and what you don’t; the rest is learned at the table.
The first fifteen minutes are always the same. People sit down still carrying the street — phones out, shoulders up. Then the first blotter comes round. Something sharp and green, like a stem just snapped. Something soft and powdery. Shoulders drop.
By the middle of the session the room is quiet in a particular way: not silent, but absorbed. Someone laughs because their blend smells like dessert. Someone else frowns over one drop more or one drop less. Nobody is checking the time.
“It was my first time. I truly enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and hands-on experience” — Inspire03548283877, review platform
If you are nervous, read our beginner’s guide to the perfume workshop before you come.
What should you do right after the session?
Walk two minutes, sit somewhere, and spray once on your wrist. The blend will already have shifted from the first sniff upstairs — the bright opening thinning, the heart coming forward. With the whole city centre at the door, Nguyễn Huệ’s fountains are the easiest place to pause.
Outside, District 1 is a city you look at. Upstairs, for two hours, it was a city you made something in.
