#2: The Art of Meditation through Lotus

Not as passionate as roses, nor as sensually alluring as lilies, the scent of lotus flickers in and out like a shadow, subtle in the nostrils yet strong enough to leave a lasting impression. Lotus is neither intense nor hurried; it gently weaves through the senses, like slow, mindful breaths in a meditative space. Beyond the boundaries of fragrance, lotus becomes a healing therapy, calming the mind for those whose hearts are restless and carrying hidden waves.

At NOTE’s perfume workshop, we had an intriguing encounter with Gwyneth – a psychiatrist from the UK, who turns to lotus as a way to soothe the inner child within her.

[A joyful chat of scent enthusiasts]

NOTE: Wow! Look at your formula. It’s truly unique. Why did you want so much lotus in it?

Gwyneth: I feel that lotus is such a pure, meditative scent. Besides, at my age, I tend to prefer fragrances that are simple, clean, and transparent. Back in the UK, I don’t often have the chance to enjoy this scent.

NOTE: You really love lotus, don’t you?

Gwyneth: I’d say yes. Perhaps because I’m a psychiatrist, or maybe it’s just an occupational habit, I’m drawn to meditative, tranquil spaces with the power to heal.

NOTE: Really? How wonderful you are!

Gwyneth: I have worked as a psychiatrist for 30 years in the UK, and I also teach nursing students. You know, to be a psychiatrist working directly with patients, soothing and treating them, requires a great deal of patience, healing, and empathy. I understand all too well the kind of emotional pain my patients have endured. That’s why I feel a deep connection with the scent of lotus as it brings a sense of serenity and healing, much like the experience of meditation. You know, meditation has the power to heal the wounds within and help us find greater calm. And that’s why I love lotus so much. So I want to put it into my perfume as a way to remember Vietnam.

NOTE: Lotus scent is truly perfect for meditation.

Gwyneth: Exactly! I’m so glad that I came to Vietnam with my daughter and found it. The scent suits me perfectly – from my personal taste to my style and even my profession. Moreover, I’m delighted to be able to create a perfume formula with my favorite scent while mixing it with other scents.

Fragrance has its own voice – a medium through which we express our style, lifestyle, preferences, and even our very selves. The world of scent is intangible, yet it becomes tangible in our memories, our emotions, and in every moment it touches. It weaves its way into the subconscious, intertwined with images, sounds, and the stories we’ve lived through. And when we choose a fragrance, we are in fact choosing a chapter of the story we wish to tell about ourselves.
